Smart, Safe Campuses in Canada
In many ways, a college or university campus is a city within a city.  In this brief presentation, James and Oliver outline their shared vision of tomorrow’s safe, smart campuses as well as address the often rapid, unpredictable digitization of campuses and the paradigmatic shift to the synergistic relationship between the physical and digital security worlds on campus. Topics addressed include the definitional parameters of a “smart, safe campus” as well as the associated technology integration, demographic transitions and expectations, identity and occupancy assurance, data sharing, the campus threat landscape, and privacy issues that such a paradigmatic shift will bring. The presenters will also provide a brief overview of how the safe, smart campus must address the introduction of new and perhaps disruptive elements, such as future crimes on campus, new paradigms of learning, new surveillance and security hardware and software needs, and new student expectations of safety and security on campus.
